Deferral Policy for undergraduate studies
Successful applicants may apply to defer commencement of their studies. Requests for deferral are not granted automatically and cannot be approved to allow the commencement of another tertiary course.
Opportunities to extend the deferral period
As a result of changes to the Youth Allowance independent criteria in the 2009 Federal Budget, the University has amended its deferral policy for local students.
Students who defer their studies so they can work towards gaining independent status under the new criteria will now have the opportunity to extend their deferral by a period of 6 or 12 months. The period of the extension will depend on the student’s preference and the structure of the course they’ve chosen.
Students made an offer for a place at the University of Melbourne will continue to initially apply to defer their commencement for up to one year. At the end of the year they will have the opportunity to apply to extend their deferral period as appropriate.
