Meeting course prerequisites
Prerequisite subjects must be completed before commencing a course and are expressed in terms of the required mark in specific Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) studies. Check course prerequisite information via Course Search.
For selection under the non-school leaver entry pathway, prerequisite study (except for English) must have been taken within the last ten years.
Prerequisites in most cases can be met with successful completion of specified VCE 3/4 units. VCE courses are available for people returning to study at a range of providers:
- Adult Community Education (ACE)
- Technical and Further Education (TAFE)
- Centre for Adult Education
- See a full list of providers on the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) website.
Alternatively, non-school leaver entry pathway applicants can choose to undertake University of Melbourne first year subjects through the Community Access Program (CAP) to meet course prerequisites.
In some cases, it may also be possible to meet prerequisites with university or TAFE subjects you have studied; contact us to see if this applies to your course.
Meeting course extra requirements
Some courses have extra requirements, depending on the course this might be a folio, interview, additional test or information session. Check course extra requirement information via Course Search.
Once course prerequisites are met
Non-school leaver entry pathway applicants are required to either:
- undertake an admissions test (the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) or Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)); OR
- undertake University of Melbourne first year subjects through the Community Access Program (CAP) and acheived the required results.
