How do I apply for the Study Abroad or Exchange Program?
Application steps
The complete application process can take up to 2 months. We strongly advise you to begin the process as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Before you apply
We highly recommend that you discuss your study abroad or exchange plans with an advisor at your home institution before applying. Our Study Abroad overseas representatives can also assist you in the process.

If there is a problem and you are unable to use the on-line application form please email global-mobility@unimelb.edu.au to request a hard copy version of the form.
To complete your application form you will need to:
- Select your subjects see: Subject selection
- List any current subjects that are not included in your transcript
- Provide evidence of prior study: this is required for some 2nd and 3rd year University of Melbourne subjects*
- Dicuss your subject selection with your home advisor to make sure you can receive credit for your studies when you return
*Students wishing to continue studies in psychology and engineering must supply a syllabi of completed courses. If staff of the faculty examining your requested subjects believe you have not met subject prerequisites an alternative will be suggested.
Step 3: Additional documentation
You need to provide the following documentation in addition to your application form:
a) Academic transcript
You must supply:
- the most recent version of your academic transcript
- An explanation of your grading system

A certified translation and the original transcript If the original language is not English
b) Two academic references
An academic reference should be written by a member of your University's academic staff who has taught you (preferably at least one of the two references should be written by a professor/lecturer from your major area of study). The reference should be written on university letterhead, be signed by the academic staff member and include mention of your academic performance, your contribution in class and your suitability for study abroad / exchange.
c) A statement of purpose

d) Language proficiency evidence
If you are studying at a university where English is not the language of instruction you must either:
- Achieve the required score in theTest of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and provide original test results
- Achieve the required score in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic and provide original test results
- or Provide evidence that you have met the University's English Language Requirements
e) Faculty specific requirements
In addition to the eligibility criteria mentioned above if you are applying to one of the following faculties you may also need to supply additional information to help in the assessing of your application.
Architecture, Building and Planning
Students wanting to do design subjects in the Faculty may be required to submit a folio of their work. It must be presented in hard copy with eight to ten A4 clear and legible copies of a range of recent design work; it should include perspective images, plans, sections and sketches showing human experience within the designs. Education
Students wanting to take part in a teaching practicum or internship through the University of Melbourne must have successfully completed some Education studies at their home institution as documented in an academic transcript. The suitability of students will be assessed on an individual basis. Students will also need to provide a police report from their home province/state and one from the province/state of their home university, if they are different, which was issued within the last six months. In addition they will need to undertake a Victoria Police check shortly after enrollment at the University of Melbourne, as required by the Department of Education and Training, to be eligible for student teaching in the State of Victoria.
Engineering
If you are intending to study two or more subjects in the Faculty of Engineering, you must nominate at least 75 points (usually 6 x 12.5 point subjects) worth of subjects from any area when you apply to avoid potential timetabling problems when you enrol.
Law
Students intending to do graduate subjects in the Melbourne Law School must provide written proof from the awarding institution, such as a completed transcript or testamur, that they have completed an undergraduade degree in Law at the time of application.
Music
Practical Study/Music Performance subjects
Students wishing to undertake Practical Study or Music Performance subjects in the Faculty of Music during their period of study at the University of Melbourne must send an audition tape or CD with their application for exchange or study abroad to the University of Melbourne. The recording should consist of at least 3 works, demonstrating the applicant's skill on the instrument he/she wishes to study. The pieces should be of contrasting styles and periods, and the audition program should be no longer than 20-30 minutes.
Ensembles
Students wishing to undertake Ensemble at the University of Melbourne may be required to audition for a place in the week prior to commencement of semester. A number of Faculty Ensembles require an audition, including the following: Orchestra, Sinfonia, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Big Band, Guitar Ensemble, Piano Duo and Duet, and Early Voices.
Studies in Music Techniques and Music History
Students wishing to undertake Music Techniques and music history subjects may be required to undertake a 1.5-hour Musicianship Test in the week preceding semester commencement to demonstrate the necessary knowledge for successful completion of the subjects. In some cases an exemption from the Musicianship Test can be granted by the Faculty of Music where there is sufficient evidence of a student's prior musical experience and/or study.
Nursing
Students wanting to take part in Nursing clinical placements through the University of Melbourne must have successfully completed some Nursing studies at their home institution as documented in an academic transcript. The suitability of students will be assessed on an individual basis. Students will also need to provide a nation-wide police report from their home country and one from the country of their home university, if they are different, which must have been issued within the University of Melbourne academic year of the intended clinical placement. In addition they will need to undertake a Victoria Police check shortly after enrolling at the University of Melbourne, as required by the Department of Human Services in order to be eligible to do clinical placements in the State of Victoria.
Physiotherapy
Students wanting to take part in a clinical placement on exchange at the University of Melbourne must have successfully completed some Physiotherapy studies at their home institution as documented in an academic transcript. Students will also need to provide a police report from their home province/state and one from the province/state of their home university, if they are different, which was issued within the last six months. The suitability of applications will be assessed on an individual basis.
Victorian College of the Arts (VCA)
Students interested in attending performance or fine art classes at the VCA can only gain entry by competitive audition or folio, in addition to the above academic and English-language requirements.
Limited places are available in the disciplines of Fine Art; Dance; Film and Television; Music and Production. Please note the following:
- Studies in the discipline of Film and Television can only be taken over the full academic year (February to November);
- There are no exchange or study abroad places available in the discipline of Drama;
- It is preferred that studies in Photography, within Fine Art, are taken only in the second semester (July to November), due to the structure of the course; and
- It is recommended that studies in the discipline of Production are taken only in second semester as the studio-based training is greatly enhanced by the larger number of projects conducted in that semester.

NOTE: Students whose visa applications will be assessed at Assessment Level 3, 4 or 5 MUST sit an IELTS test and achieve a set score in order to obtain a student visa. Please refer to Visas for further information.
Step 4: Letter of offer
You or you study abroad/exchange advisor will be notified of the success of your application.
If all required documentation is submitted application assessment usually takes 7days.
If you are successful you will receive an official letter of offer. Your offer will either be:
- Unconditional: you have met all academic and language requirements
- Conditional: you must meet the conditions of your offer before you can accept. The conditions (academic, language) will be outlined in your letter

Once you have accepted your offer an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) will be issued within 5 working days and sent to you by email.
