Information for students from Latin America
The university has wide engagement with the region and recently hosted the inaugural VIP Latin America Seminar where ambassadors and heads from seven Latin American countries discussed opportunities for future development and collaboration between Australia and Latin America in areas of mining, agriculture and foreign affairs. The seminar was opened by University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glyn Davis, Victorian Parliamentary Secretary for Human Services, Mr Telmo Langullier, and Her Excellency Martha Ortiz de Rosas, Dean of the Latin American Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of Mexico.
The University also has wide collaborative agreements in the region. As an example, in June 2007 the University and the National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT) of the United Mexican States signed a Complementary Agreement to establishing a joint program to grant graduate fellowships to Mexican students undertaking doctoral studies at Melbourne. Furthermore, the Collaborative Agreements with the Comision Nacional de Investigacion Cientifica y Technologica, Chile (CONICYT) to provide joint scholarships for Chilean PhD candidates was signed in November 2007.
A further agreement with the Instituto de Becas y Credito Educativo, Peru (INABEC) is in the final stages of negotiation.
These agreements lay a strong foundation for increasing our graduate and research training activities with South American institutions.

The student experience

"I visited Melbourne and liked the city very much. The people are friendly and laid back and there is always something to do no matter what your taste is. Melbourne Uni also has a good reputation for Commerce. I liked the feel of the campus so I decided it would be a good idea to study here. The staff are friendly and passionate about their work, and the campus has a lot of facilities for students. The library resources are very good too." |
"I can say that the highlight of my Melbourne experience was the international connections! I was part of the Latin American Student Association (LASA), and we received a lot of support from the Student Experience Team in achieving our objectives. As a student you constantly feel looked after, and you know that help is available when you need it. I was also lucky to be a Faculty of Economics and Commerce scholarship awardee – this honour helped me with my studies, encouraged me to perform better academically and pursue a leadership position in LASA." |

"I decided to study at the University of Melbourne primarily because it would allow me to pursue a high-level commerce degree while studying other areas that interest me, like informatics and languages. What I enjoy the most about my course is how it encourages me to develop different skills: my critical thinking skills are challenged in tutorials, assignments help me improve my communication skills, and business cases enhance my problem solving skills. I have learned to do research, work in teams and manage my time effectively. My experience has been very positive. In the long term I plan to work for international organisations and help my home country, Peru, forge ties with big businesses." |
"Melbourne University clearly appeared to be the best option because of its superb mix of academic excellence and recognition, together with the added value of a truly multicultural university atmosphere. The University of Melbourne not only provided me with academic enhancement but also contributed to my personal enrichment. After this experience I will have the necessary tools to operate in a global context and an extensive network of new friends and colleagues. It definitely was the greatest decision I could have ever made!" |
Visas
Most Latin American countries are eligible for student visa sub-class 1 or 2. You can find out the assessment level of your country at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. International students from level 3 and 4 countries require a pre-visa assessment from the Department before they can accept their offer.
