Student Profiles
Mike Smith
Master of Human Resource Management, 2007
ANZ Graduate Program (People Capital) 2008
Why did you choose to study commerce at the University of Melbourne?
I completed a bachelor of arts and sciences at the University of Melbourne. My undergraduate experience was
fantastic so I was interested in broadening and specialising my knowledge within an internationally renowned
department.
Why did you choose to study your particular course and how has it impacted on your career development?
Arts and sciences was an extremely broad undergraduate field. Coming straight from school, such a broad
beginning gave me the opportunity to further investigate my interests and strengths. At the completion of
this course, I had really enjoyed the business applications of psychology. MHRM therefore provided me with a
perfect opportunity to further investigate this area of study while balancing the learning with a strong
commerce business perspective. My career development has benefited significantly, undertaking a professional
program has made the transition from undergraduate to the business world seem a lot less daunting.
Did you use any of the university’s support services during your studies?
Yes, I attended the postgraduate careers day run by the Graduate Careers Centre [Faculty of Economics and
Commerce]. This program was particularly helpful as a spokesperson from Hudson came and discussed
psychometric testing. This prepared me for the interview processes.
Have you secured employment relevant to your degree?
I have been accepted into the ANZ 2008 Graduate Program (People Capital). I'm very excited about starting at
ANZ although the long days will probably take a bit of getting used to after 6 and a half years of Melbourne
Uni!
Please describe your overall experience of studying commerce at the University of Melbourne.
Studying in the Master of HRM has been a wonderful experience. I couldn’t have been part of a more diverse
and friendly group of students. I was so nervous before joining the program but it has turned out to be so much
fun. My undergraduate studies equipped me with the capacity to analyse and think critically and the Master of
HRM has taught me how to transfer and apply those skills in the business world.
