From the Vice Chancellor
I am delighted to announce that in 2008 the University of Melbourne introduces Australia's first comprehensive Graduate School model as part of its innovative education reforms under the Melbourne Model.
The University of Melbourne has a reputation for excellence, built over 154 years. Its campus is the hub of Australia's premier knowledge precinct, and the University has been a defining institution in the social, cultural and intellectual life of its home city and nation since 1853.The University's outstanding performance in international rankings puts it at the forefront of higher education in the Asia-Pacific region and the world. Melbourne is consistently ranked among the world's top 25 universities, with international peers placing it in the top 10 worldwide. Its researchers are leaders in international scholarship in fields as diverse as human rights law, telecommunications and medical research. The University's strategy signals the University's intention to be ranked as one of the world's finest universities and to enhance the international reputation of its graduates. The metaphor of a triple helix defines the strategy's character and purpose. Setting three priorities for the University - research and research training, learning and teaching, and knowledge transfer - the helix captures the complex and shifting relations between three disparate spheres of activity which are tightly bound, each reinforcing the other.
