Undergraduate English language requirements

In some cases English language requirements vary slightly for study abroad and exchange students.

Note: From 2009 all students with a VCE English, English Language or English Literature score in the 25 - 29 range (or a VCE ESL score in the 30 - 34 range) or equivalent English score in another Australian Year 12 program will be required to take a Diagnostic English Language Assessment (DELA) on enrolment at the University and to follow recommendations for language support. Your original TOEFL or IELTS test report form must be included with your application. Certified copies and TOEFL examiner's score records are not accepted.

The Hawthorn English Language Centre offers a range of English language programs that prepare international students for further university study (including IELTS preparation).

If your offer is conditional on meeting the University's English language requirements, the scores required are listed below (required scores must be achieved in one sitting):

Please note:
While both the IELTS and TOEFL test are acceptable for meeting the University's English language requirements, the requirements of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) may differ. It is recommended that you contact your nearest Australian Embassy or High Commission in order to ascertain the English requirements for obtaining a student visa.

English language requirements for study abroad and exchange students only

International study abroad and exchange students can satisfy the English language requirements by achieving a certificate of English language proficiency from their home institution with an overall grade of C1 (according to the Common European Framework) in lieu of an overall academic IELTS score of 6.5.

The English language requirement for study abroad and exhange students from Finland will be waived where students have achieved at least a grade 8 or better in English or English A in their final year of secondary school.
