What else can I do to enhance my application?
Applicants who do not achieve the above indicative scores required for the STAT and/or SAT, may elect to enrol in Community Access Program (CAP) subjects in assessed mode to demonstrate their likelihood of success and enhance their chance of selection.
CAP enables candidates to undertake academic subjects outside a normal degree structure, offering access to tertiary study at the University of Melbourne. Each faculty across the University makes a range of their respective subjects available to non-award course students via the CAP. Find more information at www.unimelb.edu.au/community/access/.
CAP may also be used to meet the prerequisites for their chosen New Generation degree (other than English).
Using CAP as a basis for selection
Students who enrol in CAP (assessed mode) as the basis for selection into a New Generation degree will be required to complete a minimum of 50 points (equivalent to four subjects) of CAP (assessed mode) study. Applicants proposing to use CAP for the purposes of enhancing their selection chances into a New Generation degrees can either:
- opt to undertake all four subjects in the one semester, in order to be in a position to apply as soon as possible; or
- instead, decide to take the four subjects over two semesters, in order to be in a better position to achieve the high standards required.
It is recommended that applicants will enrol in CAP subjects required to meet prerequisites and where possible, should complete at least half of their CAP subjects using subjects that are offered as part of their intended New Generation degree (see the University handbook for details).
Applicants will be required to obtain a grade point average across 50 points of CAP of at least 75% for admission into a Commonwealth supported place, and at least 70% for an Australian fee place in a New Generation degree.
Using CAP to meet prerequisites
The VCE prerequisites for each New Generation degree are listed below:
- Bachelor of Arts - A study score of at least 25 in Units 3 and 4 English (any).
- Bachelor of Biomedicine - A study score of at least 25 in Units 3 and 4 English (any), at least 35 in Chemistry and at least 25 in one of Biology, Mathematical Methods (either), Specialist Mathematics or Physics.
- Bachelor of Commerce - A study score of at least 25 in Units 3 and 4 English (any) and Mathematical Methods (either).
- Bachelor of Environments - A study score of at least 25 in Units 3 and 4 English (any).
- Bachelor of Music - A study score of at least 25 in Units 3 and 4 English (any). Applicants must also satisfy the audition and musicianship test requirements for this course.
- Bachelor of Science - A study score of at least 25 in Units 3 and 4 English (any), Mathematical Methods (either), and in one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
Specified first year subjects can be completed using CAP and, for applicants using the non-school leaver entry pathway, if the required standard is achieved will be deemed equivalent to the VCE prerequisite.
The following prescribed CAP (assessed mode) subjects are available to non-school leaver entry pathway applicants to meet the equivalent ‘VCE Units 3 and 4’ prerequisites:
| VCE Units 3 and 4 prerequisite | CAP (assessed mode) subject |
|---|---|
| Biology | 650-141 Biology of Cells and Organisms |
| Chemistry | 610-171 Fundamentals of Chemistry |
| Mathematical Methods | 620-173 Introduction to Mathematics |
| Physics | 640-171 Physics 1: Fundamentals |
For prerequisites VCE Units 3 and 4 which require a study score of 25, a pass (50-64%) in the corresponding first year CAP subject will be required to meet the prerequisite.
For prerequisite VCE Units 3 and 4 which require a study score of 35, a H2B (70-74%) in the corresponding first year CAP subject will be required to meet the prerequisite.
Credit for CAP study
Students who complete prescribed CAP subjects under the non-school leaver pathway will be entitled to receive credit for the subjects, providing the subjects fit into the requirements for the degree in which they subsequently enrol and total credit granted for the course does not exceed maximum amounts.
