What is university like?

If you have never been to University you will find that it can be very different from high school. Even if you have completed an undergraduate degree, postgraduate study is usually a very different experience. The Transition website is a great place to visit before beginning your studies at Melbourne.

You can also visit the First_Year@unimelb site - an online journal of student experiences. The First_Year team of bloggers ('web loggers') post regular updates about their life as university students. Here you can find information and images about the day-to-day reality of being a uni student.


Campus life

Campus life is exciting, vibrant and always diverse at the University of Melbourne. The campus community is made up of 40 000 students (8 000 international) and over 6 000 staff. To find out more about the people on campus visit our staff profiles and student profiles.

You can also learn about the University's commitment to cultural diversity and how it enriches social and academic life.

The Student Union provides students with a diverse range of services including cultural events and resources; clubs and societies, support services; student representation and academic advocacy. Membership costs $22 a month.

Melbourne University Sport offers a range of outstanding sport and recreation services and facilities, including a strength and fitness gym, 25 metre heated indoor pool, indoor courts, athletics track, hockey field and ski lodge, plus group fitness classes and access to over 40 sports clubs. Orientation and enrolment

The Orientation and Enrolment Program is the start of your academic year with the University of Melbourne. It is a great time to become familiar with the University and meet new people. The International Orientation and Enrolment Program generally commences several days earlier than the Orientation program for all new students.


School of Graduate Studies

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) is dedicated to ensuring a high quality postgraduate experience at the University of Melbourne. If you are a future postgraduate student it is essential that you visit the SGS website to learn about their services and programs.


University of Melbourne Post Graduate Association

The University of Melbourne Post Graduate Association (UMPA) is the representative body for postgraduates at the University of Melbourne . Membership costs $33 a semester and provides free or discounted access to a wide variety of social and academic services and facilities.
